History of Hapimag

Sharing Economy since 1963: The members of the Hapimag community share a large selection of holiday resorts. They use them sustainably and individually - an economically attractive and ecologically sensible alternative to their own holiday home.

A concept is born

On 24 September 1963, Dr. Guido M. Renggli and Alexander Nette establish Hapimag AG in Zug (CH). The concept – Hapimag acquires holiday properties which can be used in a flexible way by its shareholders. Shareholders then have the opportunity to spend holidays “in a place of their own” at the various locations, for little financial outlay.

Creation of the points system

Hapimag is the pioneer and creator of the points system. Shareholders and members are credited with points – initially three points per share/year, which they can use for stays in Hapimag holiday apartments. The points system is copied worldwide by other timeshare providers. The first Hapimag resorts are acquired in Italy, in Lido di Jesolo and Lido die Pombosa.

First successes

Two years after being founded, Hapimag already has around 5000 shareholders and members. More shareholders and members also means that more accommodation options need to be provided. Within just a short space of time, Hapimag increases the number of holiday apartments from 21 to 167 to be able to meet demand.

Right at home in the world’s major cities

For the first time, Hapimag makes itself at home in major world cities. Shareholders enjoy city life in London and Rome, where they immerse themselves in the vibrant life of a large city.

Rescue from ruin

Tonda is an authentic Italian village with medieval character, far from the hustle and bustle of the tourist trail. Hapimag restores the abandoned ruins there, including the church, and gives the village a new lease of life. Located right in the centre of the triangle between Florence, Pisa and Siena, the new Hapimag Resort is the ideal base for exploring the cultural treasures in these cities, as well as the picturesque countryside of Tuscany.

1983 - 1986

The portfolio gets bigger

Nature in the Black Forest, ancient culture in the Peloponnese, savoir vivre in Provence, island life in Gran Canaria, beach paradise on Majorca, Alpine adventure in Carinthia and glamour on the Côte d’Azur – the new resorts cover a wide spectrum of holiday experiences.

1986 - 1989

New resorts in prime locations

Even more resorts are opened – always in prime locations. St. Michael attracts visitors with its large wellness area, while Westerland on Sylt is the destination for shopping, partying and sports activities. Bad Kleinkirchheim tempts with spas, Munich with Bavarian cosiness and cosmopolitan flair, Braunlage with mystical mountains and mysterious forests and Paris with art, fashion and culinary scene.

10,000 new shareholders

Hapimag is getting bigger and bigger. In 1989, the promotion and sale of an innovative holiday pass attracts around 10,000 new shareholders and members for the first time. Hapimag continues to grow in the subsequent years.

New city resorts

Two more city resorts are added to the Hapimag portfolio – in Amsterdam, the resort is located centrally, on the Singel, the oldest canal in the city which was once the largest trading metropolis in the world, while the resort in Vienna is close to the Hofburg and the Spanish Riding School. Ideal bases from which guests can explore the art and culture of both capital cities.

1992 - 1996

Resorts to suit every taste

Further new additions to the Hapimag portfolio make the range of resorts even more diverse – a golfers’ paradise in Mas Nou on the Costa Brava, a children’s dream between the Adriatic and the Abruzzo in Scerne di Pineto and a jewel on the Algarve. Also, a resort full of superlatives in Bodrum on the Aegean coast in southern Turkey, a city resort for culture and history fans in Athens and a beach resort on Crete.

Hapimag goes online

On the new website, www.hapimag.com, complete information is made available about all the resorts, plus Hapimag services and offers for shareholders and members, as well as for prospective customers, all in five languages.

1998 - 2000

On the water or in a castle

New resorts open in Binz, London, Pentolina, Ascona, Bad Gastein and Budapest. Houseboats in Burgundy and on the Canal du Midi make holiday accommodation on the water available to shareholders and members for the first time and holiday apartments in the Château de Chabenet are the first in a castle.

One-stop service

The new Service Center for members opens its doors at the headquarters in Baar (CH). Over 90 employees look after the concerns of shareholders and members all around the Hapimag holiday world. The holiday apartments are also all divided into the Premium, Comfort and Budget categories, according to their location. As a result, satisfaction levels among guests increase once again.

Points Kiosk makes its world debut

Anyone not using their points for themselves is able to offer them for sale to other shareholders and members via an internet platform launched by Hapimag. This enables worldwide trading of points between rights of residence holders, which is unique within the industry.

Strong community

Having meanwhile grown 140,000 shareholders and members, Hapimag is now a strong community and, as a modern company, also uses social media such as Facebook, Xing, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Next generation

Hapimag is conscious of its responsibility as an international employer and therefore makes 18 attractive internships available in Resorts throughout Europe. During the summer months, the interns work in service, on reception and in guest hospitality – with great success for all participants.

Half a century

Hapimag celebrates its anniversary and looks back on five decades of successful company history. The original concept is as current as ever – sharing & caring. Lots of attractive offers are put together for shareholders and members – anniversary weeks at the resorts, cruises and lots more.

More sea, please!

Hapimag gladly fulfils the wish of numerous shareholders and members by opening a new resort in the popular Italian seaside town of Cavellino – situated right by the beach and close to Venice, it is a beach and city resort in one.
